August Book: Better Living Through Plastic Explosives

Somebody (I think it was the Penguin site) said this book reminded them of McSweeney’s. Exactly right. It has the same flavour of anarchic, freewheeling, anything might happen-ness. It qualifies as one of my Books of the Month because I bought it at full price from Type Books (favourite book shop in Toronto) and because I’ve never read Zsuzsi Gartner before. It’s also the first short fiction I’ve put on my list this year.

The collection made it to the finals of the Giller prize. As everyone knows by now, it didn’t win, but it was a very worthy entry, and if you’re a reader of modern short fiction I recommend it.
